CPO of a global consumer product company and his leadership team were too often surprised by short term material supply risks in both new product ramp-ups and mature mass production. As consequence, too much organization band width was wasted to reactive fire-fighting and customer satisfaction decreased due to delayed deliveries. As a remedy, the company maintained high inventories, part of the production capacity was reserved for unplanned back-log production lots and the fire-fighting actions increased Cost of Goods Sold (COGS).
